Mrs. Mary Alice Hughes Thomas, age 81, of Dothan, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2018 surrounded by her family.
Mary Alice was born April 22, 1936 to the late Arthur and Verna “Granny” Hughes in Houston County where she lived most of her life since moving from North Carolina, where she lived for 19 years and worked in nursing. She worked at Flowers Hospital in nursing for almost 15 years and since then, she has worked as a private caregiver. She loved NASCAR racing and gospel music. She attended Dothan High School, Enterprise Jr. College and Wallace College, earning her degree in nursing.
Mary Alice is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James Arthur Hughes, her son, James Frederick Thomas, her sisters, Dixie Hughes Davis and Betty Sue Hasty.
Mary Alice is survived by her son, Newell Franklin Thomas, Jr and wife, Coleen of New Bern, NC; her daughters, Debra Godwin and husband, Bill of New Bern, NC and Vickie Ross and husband, Mike of Ft. Mill, SC; eight grandchildren, Matthew (Amber) Ross, Christopher (Libby) Lee, Andrew Lee, Jacob Ross, Rebekah Ross, Derrick (Amber) Thomas, Maisie Thomas, and Ivie Thomas; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and special friends, Martha Goodson, Christine Oliver, and Mildred Wages.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Monday, March 5, 2018 from the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Revered Mike Grimes officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until 2 PM, prior to the service.
The family will be accepting flowers or contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
