Robert Cliff Lewis

Robert C. Lewis, 90, passed at home on Dec. 24, 2017 to be with our lord after a long and beautiful life.

Born at home in Houston County, Robert attended Rehobeth High School graduating as an honor student at only 16 and went on to be the first of his 5 brothers and one sister to attend college. After a stint as a naval officer, he earned a bachelor of science and two master’s degrees from University of Alabama, Roll Tide, and earned a PhD from Auburn University, War Eagle.

Putting his education to use, Robert was a real-life rocket scientist for NASA in Huntsville Alabama where he was honored for his contribution to the first manned lunar landing and an integral part of the design team for the space shuttle tail section.  He later returned to Houston County and succeeded as Headmaster of Ashford Academy for seven years.

An avid traveler, Robert and his beloved bride of 70 years went to most of the United States including Alaska and twice to Hawaii as well as Mexico, Canada and Germany.

Robert is survived by his wife Sara, two sons Robert Jr who lives in Charlotte NC with his wife Patty Sue and Barry Douglas of Dothan; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; cousins; and other relatives.

A funeral service will be celebrated at Ward Wilson Funeral Home in Dothan on Dec. 28, 2017 at 2 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1:00.
