Gary S. Coleman, a devoted servant to the city of Dothan and a cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, in his hometown of Dothan, Alabama. Born on September 8, 1956, at Moody Hospital, Gary's life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to service and his love for his family and friends.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Memory Hill Cemetery with Dr. Ricky Plummer officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.
Gary's journey began as a young man working alongside his father at Coleman Plow Company in Rehobeth, where he learned the value of hard work and dedication. His passion for service led him to a distinguished 27-year career in law enforcement, with 21 of those years spent with the Dothan Police Department. As a dedicated officer, Gary made significant contributions to the community, particularly in the Narcotics Division, where his efforts helped to keep the streets safe.
Upon his retirement from the police force, Gary continued to serve the public as a Security Guard at Dothan Regional Airport. His commitment to the safety and well-being of others was unwavering, and he was a respected member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Gary's professional life was characterized by his selfless nature and his passionate approach to his duties.
Those who knew Gary will remember him as a simple man who took great pride in his work and in serving the city he loved so dearly. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as spending time at the shooting range, where he honed his skills and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, B.S. Coleman and Marguerite Pitts Coleman, his brother, Larry Clark, and his sister-in-law, Diane Clark. His legacy of love and service lives on through his beloved wife, Susan Conway Coleman, and his extended family of special cousins, nieces, and nephews. Each of them will carry forward the memories of Gary's kind heart and his enduring spirit.
Gary's life was one of unwavering commitment to the people and the city he served. His selfless nature and passionate dedication to his work were the hallmarks of his character. He was a man who led by example, who gave more than he took, and who left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
