Jack F Thorne, PhD, CPA

Jack F. Thorne, PhD, CPA, passed away peacefully at his home March 16, 2025. He fought a hard fight against Parkinson’s and other complications for several years.

Jack was born March 22, 1939 in Clio, Alabama. His parents were Annie Segars Thorne and James Dalton Thorne. He married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Glaze in 1959. They shared a wonderful life together for 66 years. Jack and Peggy have a son, Jeff, and his wife, Cindy; a daughter, Wendy and her husband, Steven. The apple of Jack’s eye was their granddaughter, Hayley.

Jack earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Auburn University. After spending some time serving in the Army, he went to the University of Alabama to continue his education, earning a Master of Art in Accounting and Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and minors in Economics and Business Statistics. After completing his education, he taught at the University of Florida waiting for an opportunity to return to his beloved Auburn University. He taught at Auburn until his retirement in 1990. His students loved him for teaching them accounting, income tax, auditing, etc. But he was shown the most appreciation from students for the life skills he worked into his teaching.

Some of the positions and honors Jack received are Professor of Accounting; Professor Emeritus of Accounting; Scholar in Residence: Wilson, Price, Barranco, Blankenship & Billingsly, CPAs; Consultant: Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy; Partner: Seidman and Seidman, National CPA firm; Financial Accountant: Eighth U. S. Army Finance and Accounting Office. He also wrote many articles for publication in major accounting journals.

Jack was a quiet man but when he spoke it was important. We will miss him but we are thankful he is no longer in pain.

The family would like to thank God for sending an angel to take care of Jack, Amanda Johnson. He was “her buddy.”
