Joe Charles Downer

Mr. Joe Charles Downer, age 86, of Webb, passed away Friday, October 2, 2020.

Born February 6, 1934 in Geneva County to the late Joe Downer and Nolie V. Waters Downer, Joe enjoyed fishing in his younger days. He also enjoyed being a mechanic and being able to fix anything. Joe carried a love of the outdoors and keeping busy in the yard. He was the eldest member of Old Webb Road Baptist Church and was among a group of men that built the church from the ground up. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Downer and his great-granddaughter, Jaylee Jesse James.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sallie Mae Downer; his daughters, Shawna Neal, Salina Hicks (Morgan), Sharon Downer Hutto, and Stephanie Downer Moat (Paul); his brother, Marty Downer; his sister, Helon Scott; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Downer; his grandchildren, Robert Neal, Joseph Neal, Bridgett Neal, Dustin Hicks (Jessica), Dr. Tiffany Hicks Sexton, M.D. (David), Olivia Dufresne (Scott), Tyler Grantham, Katelyn Downer, and Amanda Gallaher; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, a loving church family and many special friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Old Webb Road Baptist Church with Reverend Ron Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until 11 AM, prior to the service at Old Webb Road Baptist Church.

The family requests that everyone in attendance please wear a mask and follow social distancing requirements.
