Mrs. Lois Wood Sallas passed away on March 23rd, 2023 in Dothan, Alabama. Born Lois Wood on Jan 14, 1942, in Dothan, she was the only girl in a family of seven children. She attended Ashford High School, where she excelled in academics and engendered a lifelong love for reading.  Smart, driven and extremely articulate, Lois poured herself into her studies.

On July 21, 1962, she married the love of her life, Hugh Sallas, and the couple welcomed two children, Cynthia (Cyndi) and Dennis. Lois, an amazing cook, baker and candymaker--best known for her Italian cream cake, butternut cake, and white and dark chocolate candies--made sure their home was full of love (and wonderful food).  Lois enjoyed gardening, weekly game day with friends, decorating for Christmas, making holidays extra special, and spending time with her family, including her two grandchildren, Ashton and Tanner. She and Hugh never missed a sporting event, concert, or activity for their kids and grandkids--their attendance always quietly and positively supportive. Always a calm, steady presence, Lois read voraciously throughout her life helping lead her to a storied career in the healthcare field.

Lois began her career working in Dr. Johnston’s office where she kept the books and served as the medical assistant.  Later she worked for Dr. Woods OB/GYN as an office manager.

In 1978, Dr. Harrell and Dr. Sawyer approached her about serving as office manager for Cardiology Associates in Dothan, and she accepted.  The small practice grew with the addition of Dr. Latimer and Pulmonology Associates.  In 1983, Dothan Specialty Clinic was formed to manage all the specialties:  Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Psychiatry/Sleep, Allergy and Ophthalmology.  Lois was instrumental in bringing multiple medical specialties to Dothan. She excelled in office management and while she would never boast about her accomplishments, her ability to close 96%+ of Accounts Receivables was a testament to her incredible work ethic and drive.

Lois retired in December of 2007 after 30 years of service.  Upon her retirement, the Medical Conference Library at Dothan Specialty Clinic was named in her honor.

A longtime member of Timber Drive Church, Lois will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, and doting grandmother whose contribution to the medical community in Dothan has helped countless individuals lead healthier lives. A much-loved member of her community who changed the healthcare landscape in Dothan, Lois Sallas did not merely visit this world—she made a lasting mark in it and will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, William Wood and Ettis Jones Wood; she is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Hugh Allen Sallas; and 4 brothers.

Survivors include son, Dennis (Susan) Sallas of Dothan; daughter, Cynthia Carol Sallas of Dothan; grandchildren, Ashton Elizabeth Sallas and Tanner Houston Sallas (Molly Pearce); and brothers, Danny Wood and Joe Wood.
