Phillip Karns Obituary

Mr. Phillip J. Karns of Dothan passed away Monday, January 22, 2024 at the age of 97.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday, January 26, 2024 at Enterprise Baptist Church in Ashford with Dr. David Baker officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Church Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11 A.M. Friday, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Phillip Karns’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Phillip J. Karns was born in Auburndale, Florida, on 23 August 1926, and grew up there with his parents and four siblings. He was working at a filling station when he heard the announcement about the attack on Pearl Harbor, an event that prompted his joining the Navy as soon as he graduated high school. Phillip spent eight years in the Atlantic fleet as an air ordnance man.

In 1951, he married his sweetheart Lucille Paul, originally from Ashford, Alabama. Phillip later joined the Air Force so he could be home with his wife and family. In 1956 they welcomed with great joy their first child, Sam Karns. In 1964, their daughter Kelli joined the family. Phillip and Lucy were married for over 72 years.

Phillip retired from the Air Force in 1967, and finished his Bachelor of Science degree with a double major, Mathematics and Physical Science, and immediately went to work for IBM at Cape Canaveral on Apollo 11. After the moon landing, the family transferred to Boca Raton, Florida, where Phillip and Lucy lived happily for 50 years. After retiring from IBM, Phillip pursued his passion for genealogy, traveling across the country for information and to meet distant relatives.

In January of 2022, Phillip and Lucy sold their home and relocated to Midland City, Alabama, to be near family.

Phillip is survived by his lovely and much loved wife Lucy, his son Sam, both in Midland City, and his daughter Kelli, in Columbus, Georgia.
