The family regretfully announce the passing of Vassie Powell Watkins, age 90, on October 8, 2023 peacefully at her daughter’s home in Pensacola, Florida.
Our mother was one of the bravest, most holy women to ever walk this earth. Our family was blessed to have her as head of this family for the past 24 years. Mother was born June 22, 1933 in Grand Junction, Florida to Sylvester and Becky Stewart. After a precarious childhood, she met and married Fernie Powell on October 8, 1948 in Donalsonville, Georgia. This union produced four remarkable children and provided them with a loving and secure childhood. She managed to raise her family and spend 25 years at Ansel Inc until she retired. One of her greatest passions was the Atlanta Braves. She spent countless hours watching at the games or on TV. She was most dedicated to her faith and church for over 60 years, no easy task getting four kids fed and dressed for church every Sunday. After Daddy died, she married Raymond Watkins in 2000 up until his death in 2010. In 2020 she left her beloved Alabama to live with her daughter, Dusty and her family where she was doted on constantly. Even the pet dog, Pumpkin, brought her much joy. Mother went to Heaven October 8 where I’m sure she was welcomed by Daddy to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary together.
She is survived by her children, Vallorie (Archie) Neal, Mark (Charlene) Powell, Dusty (Ray) Parker, and Brad (Barbara) Powell; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 12 PM, Thursday, October 12, 2023 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with burial following in Friendship Assembly of God Cemetery in Taylor. The family will receive friends from 11 AM until 12 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home.
