Retired 1SG George Robert (Bobby) Sowell Pansey, Alabama

Passed away with his family by his side November 28, 2017 @ 6:10 PM at Southeast Alabama Medical Center, Dothan, AL.   Bobby was born June 28, 1946 in Dothan, AL to George & Ruth Sowell.  Bobby graduated Dothan High School in 1964, and joined the Alabama Army National Guard in 1965.  While serving he was employed full time with the National Guard Armory in Ashford, Alabama  from 1975 until his retirement in 2005.  While serving he was called to active duty in 2002 – 2004 for Noble Eagle 2 & 3 and was mobilized in Anniston Alabama at Ft. McClellan.  He was a part of the Co. D 131st Unit from Ashford, Alabama and at the time of retirement was a 1SG and received numerous awards and metals throughout the years of service.

Bobby was a member of Union Springs Freewill Baptist Church, Pansey, AL, where he served as the Adult Sunday School teacher and Asst. Sunday School Superintendent and served on numerous committees. 

Bobby was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, soldier and a loyal friend to many.  Bobby has always cherished his wife (Doris) of 38 years and spending time with his children and now the best part his four grandchildren.  Bobby enjoyed camping, trips to the mountains, Disney World and the beach, as well as, spending time with his best dog friend Zazoo.    

Bobby is preceded in death by his parents and one brother Michael Sowell.  He is survived by his wife, Doris Fulton Sowell, son Robert Sowell, daughters Kellie (Greg) Free & Stephanie (Gary) Jenkins; four grandchildren Andrew Sowell, Garrison Jenkins, Bailey Ethridge & Olivia Ethridge; sister Ruthene Crane.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Sowell, Garrison Jenkins, Bailey Ethridge, Greg Free, David Brunson and Don Knight. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Co. D 131st unit and the Patriot Riders.

The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Ward Wilson and funeral will be Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2pm with visitation one hour prior at Union Springs Freewill Baptist Church, 3767 East Cook Rd., Pansey, AL with Rev. Terry Drinkwater & Rev. James Welch officiating.   Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
